When COVID-19 canceled all its clients' weddings, floral design company Sweet Root Village lost 80% of its business and was stuck with thousands of flowers. So its owners, Lauren Anderson and Rachel Bridgwood, got creative. They hosted a drive-through event to save all those stranded flowers. Business Insider stopped by their pop-up flower market in Alexandria, Virginia, to see how Sweet Root Village's other pivots have saved the small business.

  • I work for a funeral home and I know at least in California, flower shops are doing very well right now...if the flower shops make relationships with the local funeral homes, we send all our family’s their way for the arrangements.

I know it's morbid but their business survive even tho now their most popular product is wooden casket.

  • I don't understand why they're struggling though, Calgary flower shops are actually earning almost double the amount that they used to before COVID.

    L E N A M A A N IL E N A M A A N IPrieš mėn
    • @Vivi Buffy Well it seems like the shop in the video did mostly weddings before covid so they would be more affected, whereas the shops in Calgary are used to the economic downfalls of living in a oil-dependant economy so they've been diversifying the services they offer for years, and because of this they've focused on selling arrangements mostly and since the rich havent been able to spend their money on things they have in the past they now buy flowers on a more regular basis.

    • Obviously these ladies' mainly cater for weddings and events that require social gatherings. Many of those got cancelled/postponed. The flowers meanwhile will still perish. Anyway, would you share an insight of how the Calgary flower shops are earning almost double with the pandemic? Who are buying their flowers? I'm genuinely curious.

  • Crazy how so many are critical of the creative response of a business struggling to stay alive. Many show ignorance of the industry and of business in general. In addition to cancelled weddings, funeral services were also cancelled during covid. They have thousands of dollars in perishable product that can’t be cancelled and little revenue. Employees depend on them and there is no income. Sure, they can donate unsold flowers...how does this help them stay in business? My hat goes off to them for finding ways to make it work under intense time and money pressure. I hope they steadfastly ignore the idiotic criticism of those who don’t understand that if a business isn’t making something then there is no longer a business. Instead of laying down and giving up, they are making it work. You inspire me ladies!

  • The flower shop I work for has become more busy during Covid 2020. The first month was a bit difficult and lack of funerals was tough at first but now they're back and it is overwhelming. Glad I don't work at an event based flower shop, I do less than 20 events a year on regular so all the social distancing birthday arrangements and sympathy /funeral arrangements have us going strong. This is one of our best years. I am so appreciative to have a job and enjoy doing what I'm doing even in these times.

  • Thanks for this videos, it really helps I still feel the best way to make it big financially still remains in online investment mostly Bitcoin and Forex trading ever since the Covid-19 pandemic, however a lot of traders (newbies) has lost so much due to the fact that they traded with the wrong strategy/daily signals with low trading experience. For me, it's been a success story not just because i invested so much but making use of the right strategy/daily signals which was properly guided by a pro trader known as Helen.Howard my first 5 weeks of trading with Owen's daily signals i was able to accumulate and grow my portfolio from 1.1btc to 6.8btc which you would agree is a very good profits. I will kindly advise we should grow the little we hold ahead of the major bull run, Helen can be reach via *Whatspp: (+12065800129) and Telgram for inquiries into profitable trading systems.

  • Have you ever wondered how profitable the trading industry is? Have you also thought about the amount of profit experts in this industry make? Do you know these experts and professionals wake up each day knowing they can reap very big money from trading stocks and currencies. I found out and I’m benefiting from it no matter how small. I keep advising newbies to minimize losses and maximize profits by getting an expert account manager. Nothing will ever beat the experience of an expert who have the right psychology of trade and the best trading strategies. Since I started having *Crystal Legend* as my account manager, I've stopped self trading completely and depend on his weekly profit payout which is massive. Making over $18,600 weekly is indeed a perfect outcome. You too can earn as much as I do. Promo time... Message *Crystal Legend* on whatsapp with +1(650)254-6146. He'll guide you to profit.

  • honestly theres alot of things you can do with flowers like make pigments, dehydrate them, etc and get alot od money just for arts and crafts

    eveevePrieš mėn
  • Ok, so flowers could have been composted, but there are Americans without food because food was left to rot in the fields. Isn’t it more important to pick fruit and vegetables than some flowers that were bred to look nice and not even smell good? Not to mention all the people who passed away where they could have donated to families in need.

    Pree ThamPree ThamPrieš mėn
  • Maybe now since the “wedding industry” is down weddings in the future won’t be expensive.

    Michael O’BrienMichael O’BrienPrieš mėn
    • @Jena Chapman this is not correct. It's a known fact that vendors hike their prices once the word wedding is mentioned. The wedding industry is a scam.

      Bee DeeBee DeePrieš 29 dienų
    • The reason why wedding stuff is more expensive is because it’s the only time a normal person is paying for a corporate level event. And it’s an event you’re having sometimes once your whole life. That is why it’s expensive. You are an individual paying for something that is usually in a company budget.

      Jena ChapmanJena ChapmanPrieš mėn
    • I wish... but I think there would still be those who wants the "traditional wedding" and the industry will still overcharge. Annnnnd that's why it's not for me. I'd rather save my money and have a small, cozy wedding, where I get or make most of my stuff together with my partner and my friends/family.

  • So they stay in business by presenting themselves as charitable. Good one.

    redngoldenredngoldenPrieš mėn
    • @redngolden -- You didn't "explicitly" state anything. You IMPLIED that they're actions were somehow less than sincere. If you took my comment as critical and/or judgemental, that's on you. And as for being a mess; I'd rather be messy than be whatever you are.

      M LM LPrieš mėn
    • @M L I never criticized or judged anyone. I merely explicitly stated what they did not. Ironically, you have criticized and judged me. You're a mess.

      redngoldenredngoldenPrieš mėn
    • "Presenting themselves as charitable"? If they formally declared themselves unemployed they couldn't then go forth and make money so instead of allowing their beautiful flowers and plants to simply die they devised and executed a plan to get them into the hands of those who could and would enjoy them while raising money for a worthy cause. There's no good reason to criticize or judge them. Like many small business owners, they're simply trying to not go out of business.

      M LM LPrieš mėn
    • they did donate some money though

      SerenaSerenaPrieš mėn
  • Just curious - why were they donating the money from their drive through sale?

    Alexandra ChristensenAlexandra ChristensenPrieš mėn
