The Rise And Fall Of The Mall

Starting with the opening of the Southland Mall in 1956 malls have been a vaulted piece of Americana for decades. Thousands were built across the country and for a while it seemed they would dominate the American landscape forever, but in recent years they’ve rapidly lost their value. So how did malls go from being a mainstay in American society to a quickly vanishing memory?

The Rise And Fall Of The Mall

  • I'm from the Philippines and we have a shopping mall chain called SM, in the past 4 years they've opened two malls in my town at close proximity of each other but far enough not to be connected into one. once they opened the bigger, swankier, second mall in 2019 a number of stores from the old mall moved and so did the foot traffic. It sucks for the shop owners to be part of this big corporation cannibalizing on itself at the expense of their investors.

  • As an old school mall rat, I want to believe that all of this pent up need for gatherings will bring the mall back to prominence. It may look different in some parts but I hope it explodes again during the new Roaring ‘20’s.

  • I posted a video not that long ago from a walk I took at the former Echelon Mall in NJ. It used to be a thriving mall but now there is one anchor store(Boscovs) with a few community offices, medical offices, and cell phone stores. Shame to see. Where I live(South Jersey), the Shore Mall is gone, the Hamilton Mall is on life support, the Deptford Mall is alive but barely, and the Cumberland Mall is barely breathing as well.

  • internet and online shopping contributing to peoples lazy, sedentary lifestyles. I'd rather go to a mall than online shop. I like to look at things, try them on, feel the quality of the material etc... People complain about people like Bezos having too much money and causing the failure of brick and mortar stores, or contributing to the decline of American made products but won't stop shopping at amazon... because it's "cheaper"...make it make sense.

  • If you ever tried to open a business in the mall, you must have mixed emotions about their decline. The owners charged absolutely blackmail prices for you to be there; now, sadly, they're gone, testament to the power of the computer, the iPhone, and our tendency to be, well, lazy...

  • To whomever is reading this, I want to remind you that God loves you and he has a wonderful plan for your life! 😁 If you were to suddenly die this very moment where do you think you would spend eternity?? If you are not sure, God wants to let you know that he loves you very much and he sent his Son Jesus to die for your sins that you would not perish but have eternal LIFE!! God came to me, saved me and filled me with his spirit when I was at a low point in my life a few years ago. God will do the same for you if you allow him. You have a choice, but YOU ARE GODS CHOICE and he will NEVER CHANGE! He wants a RELATIONSHIP with you! He loves you! The bible says in Romans 6:23 that the wages of Sin is death! But the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour!! Romans 10:9,13 says that WHO EVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF JESUS AND BELIEVES IN THEIR HEART AND CONFESSES WITH THEIR MOUTH THAT HE IS LORD SHALL BE SAVED!! Im going to say a prayer for you! Lord bless my friend and their family with a long and healthy life. Lord I pray you make yourself real to them like you did for me in Jesus name. Friend, If you would like to receive Jesus in your heart or rededicate your life to him say this with me with your heart and lips outloud... Dear Lord Jesus, come into my heart, forgive of all my sins, wash me and cleanse me, set me free. I believe that Jesus is the son of God and that you died and rose again and are coming back again for me. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. Jesus make yourself real to me. I accept you today as my Lord and Saviour. I'm born again, all my sins are forgiven, I have a home in heaven because Jesus is in my heart! Friend if you've said that prayer, I pray that from this day forward your life will never be the same. I tell you today that all your sins are forgiven, and always remeber dont run from God but run to him because Jesus Loves You and has a plan for your life!! If you prayed with me, plz type amen!

  • Amazing Video. Bitcoin has faced a rather strong resistance after its explosion to the $11,100 highs. At the recent lows, the asset traded as low as $10,300 - around 8% ish below the local highs couple of weeks back. Despite this slight slip and the fact that BTC remains above $14,000, we should all remain bullish on Bitcoin. I think bitcoin could soon move higher to $20,000 in a couple of days. As a crypto trader the past few weeks has recorded immerse benefits all round,,, my only regret now is not knowing Mr taylor on time, his top notch signals remains the bedrock of the successes recorded in my personal trading portfolio. his trading technics helps me get my profit... i already made $100k with his. investing on cryptocurrencies is now the new source of income for everyone he continues to be an inspiration to all who have been fortunate to have made use of his signals. You all can reach out to him through or on WhatsApp +1 409 299 3921

I watched every single mall in my city slowly die due to a certain group of people that believe regular shootings, carjackings and knockout games should be a part of our culture!!!

  • I think a big part of the problem is that stores have become to utilitarian and boring. That's ok for big box stores in shopping centers, but it doesn't work for malls. Malls need the type of stores that are fun to browse and just hang out in, even if you don't intend to buy anything. Remember stores like Natural Wonders or the toy store Zany Brainy? Or Halloween stores that felt like a haunted house exhibit? You felt like you were visiting a fun interactive children's museum when you went in one of those kinds of stores. They had all kinds of fun, unique merchandise that was out on display and you could just go in there to play with the stuff. That's the kind of thing malls need to have, especially the smaller ones that aren't able to put in things like indoor amusement parks. Unfortunately, I guess those kinds of stores can only profit in a boom economy and in the world that existed before the internet. (at least in the U.S, anyway)

Plus its all fast food except high priced places a family would not go to. I would love a reasonable price sit down place that serves stuff like steaks, burgers and simple stuff. This just may be my mall issues. A putt putt with glow in dark too would be nice. Plus a variety of stores for everyday people. Not everyone wants fancy clothes. Plus how many different jewelry and shoe stores does a mall need ? Sorry for the rant. Hope everyone is happy and safe
