What It Takes To Be A Dancer For The Golden State Warriors

Every summer, hundreds of jazz and hip-hop dancers audition for one of 21 coveted spots on the ultra-talented all-female dance division of the Golden State Warriors. Known for their energetic in-game performances, the Warriors Dancers are the most recognizable women on the court. Showing us what it’s really like to be a Warriors Dancer is 5-year veteran and team captain Hannie, who knows all about what goes in to the role. Like her fellow dancers, she juggles her day job with late-night rehearsals, community appearances, costume fittings, physical therapy, hair and makeup sessions, and memorizing almost 40 dance routines per season. Though it appears glamorous, the job is an enormous commitment and a labor of love, set against the backdrop of sweeping, sport-wide changes to increase inclusivity and diversity. Today’s Warriors Dance Team, previously known as the “Warriors Girls”, have done away with swimsuit calendars and pom-poms in favor of greater representation from all genders and ages. Find out what it’s like to be Hannie, how she got here, and what it's been like for her during the unexpected end of the 2019-2020 basketball season.

  • What I find crazy about the dance world is that you almost have to be overqualified. Not in this group per day, but I find that at least on the youth level, it’s nearly impossible to make a team/performance unless you can do elements that are way harder than the performance entails. I guess it’s just to make sure that everyone is super clean tho!

  • The amount of comments that are reducing these women to basically hookers or strippers is really disgusting... dance is a sport, these women are part-time athletes balancing that with another full-time job. They deserve real respect for what they do. Even though you might not notice them, and they’re not the focal point of the game, doesn’t mean they don’t have value

    MikaelaMikaelaPrieš 7 mėnesių
    • @It's Okay the makeup is required so show up under stadium lighting. These dancers are dancers, not strippers, not cheerleaders. These dancers could be cheerleaders though, These dancers are over qualified as simply cheerleaders. I have three degrees in dance to back it up. What's your area of dance expertise?

Areté Dance CenterAreté Dance CenterPrieš 2 mėnesius
    • Strippers, hookers, dancers, people are free and should be free to choose whatever they wanna be, its their own body and their own choice, when you are not respecting their choice, you are not respecting freedom.

    • @4040tee Shut up

      ushiii `ushiii `Prieš 5 mėnesių
    • @4040tee a) so what if they were strippers?? as rayyan pointed out strippers deserve respect too. b) by that logic, pretty much all women in entertainment are strippers so that just shows you don't care about these women you just have a shitty attitude towards all women that arent meek and subservient so yknow your input on this is really irrelevant 😃😃😃😃

      MikaelaMikaelaPrieš 6 mėnesių
    • @Ray Tas oh yeah thats absolutely true I'm sorry if my comment came across like I didn't think strippers deserve credit for what they do, I think any person regardless of/because of their work deserves credit especially things like dancing or exotic dancing which are both physically and creatively demanding so yeah haha I agree

      MikaelaMikaelaPrieš 6 mėnesių
  • The cheerleaders have always been invisible, but I never realized how much they have to go through to get to the position they are in. This video has given me a new perspective. Thank you!

    AdrianneAdriannePrieš 7 mėnesių
    • they are not cheerleaders as she says. That is why they got rid of the palm palms. They are "dancers". I have seen the dancers at the warriors games. They are good. I never knew how much they practiced and what it takes to become one. Typically the dancers come out mostly during half time and time outs. That is when I tend to go get more food or drinks.

    JoeJoePrieš 7 mėnesių
    • It depends on how well-known and reputable you are. Take for example choreographers, there's plenty that find ways through teaching/having classes, being freelancers and whatnot. Having a platform on LTworlds definitely helps for extra revenue as well.

      CindyCindyPrieš 6 mėnesių
    • Maggie Brunner That’s inspiring! I’m in school right now, and I wonder if I can still do something performance related on the side, even with a rigorous hospital/clinic schedule. Thanks for sharing! In the end, all factors must align, but there are factors that are within our control. I guess that’s what your neurosurgeon friends are doing, but all in all, it’s inspiring.

      Bacall McElroyBacall McElroyPrieš 6 mėnesių
    • Depends. if you get a contract job and you're in the union you can definitely survive financially. Think about dancers in long running Broadway/touring/cruise shows or in full time companies. But as a freelancer it is a lot harder, most of us also have other dance adjacent jobs like working in costuming, teaching, or as an arts administrator

      Nailah Ramcharan-GibbsNailah Ramcharan-GibbsPrieš 7 mėnesių
    • It depends on what path you choose...if you choose to be a dancer, you kinda have to promote yourself out there to get a job (performance)...if you choose to be a choreographer, people will pay you for your piece...you also can become a teacher, dance critics or dance writer (normally if you pursue in Masters or PhD but you can start writing earlier anyway)...

    • Sad? It's what they are really passion about. Plus at least they are each doing some productive with their life. Just like if you had some type of passion which we all do. Say you had a passion for playing an instrument or singing. You would do it a ton of times and even try to make a career out of it if you loved it that much. You would take it seriously because you wan to be the best and you love doing what you do. I also want to point out they seem to love what they are doing which is a major plus. How many people have you encountered that just hate their dob or better yet just dislike it but do it anyways because ''it's a job''? I have many friends like that. In fact I have one friend that has been a fire fighter for many many many many years now. That friend of mine work place has just sucked in recent year or 2. Certain people are getting promoted when they shouldn't be or certain people kissing ass. It's just all being political too. My friend is ready to retire soon and get out...that is how bad it has become. See I then ask myself well why not just get out of a job if you dislike it that much? I guess it's easier said then done. I always say...do what you love to do. Do what makes you happy.

And the other benefits the team pays for can save them a lot of money, especially if they were going to be doing things like hair and fake nails anyway. She makes more at her part time job than I do at my full time job! And if they chose to have another job outside of that, they're REALLY making good money. Yeah they don't make as much as the players, but we all know that sport athletes are stupidly overpaid.
